The Global Trade Brief · 7 September 2026
Five minutes to understand what matters in global trade.
The Big Move
Container fleet comes within 8,000 TEU of 34m record
Why it matters: The near-term inflow increases nominal vessel capacity, adding structural supply pressure to container shipping markets.
- August brought 20 deliveries totalling 153,000 TEU.
- September has 46 ships totalling 286,000 TEU scheduled for delivery.
- Less than 300,000 TEU was recycled over the past five and a half years.
- At the milestone, five-and-a-half-year growth will total 10m TEU, or 42%.
The Route
Delays remove 2.3m TEU of effective container capacity
Why it matters: Shippers have less usable capacity and face greater late-arrival exposure despite growth in the nominal fleet.
- Schedule reliability fell to 56.4% in July, its lowest level since February 2025.
- Vessels arriving late were delayed by more than six days on average.
The Number
Air cargo demand grows +6% year on year in August
+6%
Why it matters: Shippers must wait longer for a larger decline in still-elevated rates, with corridor pricing continuing to reflect local supply and demand.
- Global spot rates remained 24% above a year earlier at US$3.13/kg.
- China e-commerce exports to Europe fell 25% after the EU duty on low-value shipments.
- Spot-rate growth eased for a third consecutive month.
- Spot rates fell 3% from July.
The Risk
UGT calls Guadalajara logistics strike from 21 September
Why it matters: Cargo owners and operators face potential handling and distribution disruption across Guadalajara province.
- UGT says more than 45,000 logistics workers are covered by the call.
- Sector agreement talks began nine months ago without producing a deal.
- UGT says the strike will go ahead if employers do not change position.
- Annual working time of 1,800 hours is one issue in dispute.
What to Watch
- Watch Asia-Europe spot rates and Barcelona vessel calls as container services gradually return via Suez.
- Watch Hormuz traffic and South Korea’s preparations for a possible naval deployment.
- Watch forecast El Niño conditions in H2 2026 and any effects on Panama Canal capacity.
