DHL says AI in logistics is moving from assisting people to acting on its own
4 October 2026 · Cargo Forwarder Global · Type: News
DHL has published its Logistics Trend Radar. It says artificial intelligence in supply chains is shifting from tools that help staff to so-called "agentic" AI, which can plan, decide and act towards a goal without step-by-step instructions. The article also reports warnings from social scientists that weak education and training could leave workers behind.
Why it matters: Freight forwarders and customs agents will increasingly be offered software that executes tasks, not only suggests them. Importers and exporters should ask providers which decisions are automated and who is responsible when the automated decision is wrong.

Asia–Europe container rates down about 60% since July as Suez transits resume
6 October 2026 · The Loadstar
Container shipping demand fell for the first time since January, helped by cancelled sailings during China's Golden Week and nearly 200,000 TEU of new ships delivered in September. Asia–Europe spot rates dropped to $2,199 per TEU on 2 October. Several large carriers (ONE, CMA CGM, Maersk, MSC) are again routing Asia–Europe services through the Suez Canal, which shortens transit times and adds effective capacity to an oversupplied market.
Why it matters: Buyers of Asia–Europe transport may have room to negotiate, but a lower spot rate does not change contract terms already signed. Check the review clauses in your freight agreements.
Xeneta: Far East–US spot rates reach their peak for 2026, but are not expected to collapse
2 October 2026 · Xeneta, via AJOT
Xeneta's weekly update reports spot rates on 1 October of $8,346 per 40-foot container (FEU) from the Far East to the US West Coast and $11,523 per FEU to the US East Coast. North Europe routes were between $3,726 and $4,105 per FEU. US routes are up 334–344% since 28 February. Xeneta states the market has reached its peak after the Hormuz crisis and forecasts US East Coast rates of $6,000–7,000 per FEU by year-end.
Why it matters: Exporters and importers on US lanes still face rates several times higher than in February. Budget for a gradual fall, not a quick return to earlier levels.

Flydubai signs a unit load device management deal as it expands its cargo business
6 October 2026 · Air Cargo News
Flydubai has agreed a long-term contract with Unilode Aviation Solutions for unit load devices (ULDs, the containers and pallets used to load aircraft). The deal covers supply, maintenance, repair, fleet planning and digital tracking for its new freighters and upcoming Boeing 787 aircraft.
Why it matters: More freighter capacity from the Gulf region adds options for air cargo routing between Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Ask your forwarder about these routings when quoting urgent shipments.

German rail freight faces another major price increase in 2028
6 October 2026 · RailFreight.com
A German court ruling on 1 October set a cost ceiling of €8.2 billion for 2027 for DB InfraGO, the state rail infrastructure manager. This could allow higher track access charges than previously expected. DB InfraGO says it will not use the full limit. Operators already face a 75% rise in these charges.
Why it matters: Higher track charges usually reach shippers as higher rail freight prices. If you move goods by rail through Germany, expect surcharges to be discussed in 2027 and 2028 contracts.
Spain signs €1.2 billion of port-rail connection agreements with Adif
6 October 2026 · RailFreight.com
Spain's Ministry of Transport has approved a financing programme of nearly €2 billion to improve access to ports. Of that, €1.2 billion is for multi-year rail projects with Adif, the state rail infrastructure manager. The amount is well above earlier projections for the Port-Land Accessibility Financial Fund.
Why it matters: Better rail links to Spanish ports can make rail a more realistic option for containers to and from the interior. The benefits will take years to appear.
Baltic Hub raises its rail siding capacity to 1.2 million TEU per year
6 October 2026 · RailFreight.com
The Baltic Hub container terminal in Gdańsk, Poland, bought two new electric rail-mounted gantry cranes. It now has six handling machines on seven 750-metre tracks and handles about 800 trains per month. Total terminal capacity is 4.5 million TEU per year.
Why it matters: Larger rail capacity at a Baltic port gives importers and exporters in Central and Eastern Europe another route for containers by train.

Duisport adds four weekly rail round trips between Trieste and Duisburg
6 October 2026 · RailFreight.com
Duisport, the German inland port, is increasing rail service on the Cervignano–Duisburg corridor to four weekly round trips. Shuttle trains link the HHLA PLT Italy terminal in Trieste with an inland consolidation hub at Cervignano, where sea cargo can be combined with continental cargo.
Why it matters: A sea-plus-rail route through the Adriatic gives importers of Asian goods an alternative to North Sea ports for reaching Germany.
