Flexport links its freight platform to Claude, Gemini and OpenAI
7 October 2026 · retailnews.asia · Type: News
Flexport, a digital freight forwarder, has connected its platform to three AI assistants (Claude, Gemini and OpenAI) through an open API and a standard called Model Context Protocol, which it introduced in September. Retailers can now ask an AI assistant to run supply chain forecasts directly on live shipment data, instead of stitching together spreadsheets from several vendors.
Why it matters: AI assistants will only be as good as the shipment data behind them. Importers need clean origin records and reliable carrier updates from their forwarders before any such tool is useful.
DHL report: AI moves from tool to autonomous operator in logistics
4 October 2026 · Cargo Forwarder Global · Type: News
DHL's Logistics Trend Radar report looks at how artificial intelligence and humanoid robots are converging in supply chains. It identifies three trends: AI-driven commerce, the compute economy and humanoid robots. The report argues that AI is shifting from a support tool to a system that acts on its own, and warns that weak training could leave workers competing with machines.
Why it matters: Large logistics operators are planning around autonomous AI. Smaller companies that depend on them should ask which parts of their service will be automated, and who is responsible when an automated decision is wrong.

United States trade deficit reaches a 17-month high of $105.6 billion in August
6 October 2026 · Hoodline (data: U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis and Census Bureau)
The monthly U.S. goods and services trade deficit rose 13.7% from July to $105.6 billion. Imports of semiconductors for AI data centres led the increase, and most of them entered duty-free under statutory waivers. The largest bilateral deficits were with Mexico ($27.7 billion), Vietnam ($24.0 billion) and Taiwan ($18.3 billion).
Why it matters: Tariffs have not stopped U.S. import demand where waivers apply. Exporters to the United States should check whether their product falls under an exemption before assuming tariff costs.

Xeneta: Asia–U.S. container rates have peaked, but a sharp fall is unlikely
6 October 2026 · FreightWaves
Spot rates for a 40-foot container (FEU) from the Far East stood at $8,346 to the U.S. West Coast and $11,523 to the East Coast on 1 October, according to rate analyst Xeneta. Easing port congestion in Asia and China's Golden Week holiday are pulling rates down. Xeneta forecasts $4,500–5,500 per FEU to the West Coast and $6,000–7,000 to the East Coast over the next three months.
Why it matters: Rates are expected to fall but stay high through year end. Importers negotiating contracts or booking Q4 space should not wait for a collapse.
DP World plans a container terminal in Corpus Christi, Texas
5 October 2026 · FreightWaves
Dubai-based terminal operator DP World has signed a lease option with the Port of Corpus Christi for a container terminal of about 1 million TEU a year. It would be the company's first U.S. container terminal since 2006, when political opposition over security concerns forced it to sell its U.S. port interests. The port has bought roughly 2,000 acres for an inland port to support the project.
Why it matters: New Gulf Coast container capacity could give importers and exporters another gateway option, though the project is at an early stage.

TA Services buys two Texas cross-border carriers, adding 133 trucks
6 October 2026 · FreightWaves
U.S. logistics provider TA Services has acquired Carmen Pacheco Transportation and Interload Forwarding. The deal adds 133 trucks and 550,000 square feet of warehouse space in El Paso and Laredo, two main gateways for U.S.–Mexico road freight.
Why it matters: Cross-border trucking on the U.S.–Mexico corridor continues to consolidate. Shippers should check the capacity and service terms of the carriers they use.
Einride and EASE start daily driverless freight runs in Ohio
6 October 2026 · FreightWaves
Einride and EASE Logistics have put two cabless electric trucks (SAE Level 4, meaning fully automated within defined areas) into daily service between warehouses in Marysville, Ohio, under an $8.8 million corridor project. Remote operators oversee the trucks. EASE plans to extend the service to auto rack transport.
Why it matters: Driverless freight is moving from pilots to scheduled operations, but for now only on short, fixed routes.
