Port NOLA tests AI to plan moves of oversized cargo by rail
8 October 2026 · Splash247 · Type: News
Port NOLA, the port of New Orleans in the United States, is working with UTC/Transoceanic and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad on a system that combines AI-based rail-clearance technology with a digital model of the local rail network. It is meant to show earlier whether a heavy or oversized shipment, such as a power transformer, turbine or industrial generator, can move by rail and which routes are possible. The port has direct access to all six US Class I (major) railroads.
💼 Why it matters: Project cargo planning often fails late, when a route turns out to be too tight or too heavy. Tools that check route feasibility early reduce quotation risk. Ask your forwarder how they validate routes before they commit to a delivery date.
Flexport lets AI agents book freight: who signed the contract?
6 October 2026 · The Loadstar (premium comment) · Type: News
Flexport, a US freight forwarder and logistics platform, has launched a server based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) that lets a shipper connect its own AI agents, for example Claude, ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot, to book freight at negotiated rates without logging in to the platform. The Loadstar asks who is legally responsible if an agent makes a wrong booking. Its summary says that US contract law and Flexport's revised platform terms place the cost of a wrong booking on whoever connected the agent.
💼 Why it matters: If your company lets software book transport on its behalf, you may be bound by what the software books. Review the platform terms and set internal approval limits before you connect any agent to a carrier or forwarder.
OceanRate turns ocean rate sheets in any format into structured data
7 October 2026 · The Loadstar (sponsored article by the vendor) · Type: Tool
OceanRate, a product of Ship Angel Labs, converts ocean rate sheets in formats such as Excel, PDF, Word, EDI, CSV, emails and photos into one structured layout with origin, destination, container type, rate, currency, surcharges and validity dates. The output can be exported to Excel or JSON. The vendor says its enterprise customers reduced rate-management time by about 85%. This is a sponsored text and the figure is the vendor's own claim; the tool is in early access with a waiting list.
💼 Why it matters: Re-typing carrier rate sheets causes errors and slows down rate comparison. If you buy ocean freight from several providers, structured rate data is the first step before you can compare offers or audit invoices.

Suez Canal return threatens carriers' attempts to stop the rate slide
6 October 2026 · The Loadstar
Demand growth measured in TEU-miles (container capacity multiplied by distance) fell for the first time since January. Carriers cancelled long-haul sailings during China's Golden Week holiday, which began on 1 October, newbuild ships are arriving, and more vessels are returning to the Suez Canal on Asia-Europe routes. Asia-North Europe rates are down about 60% since July. The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) stood at $2,199 per TEU and $3,378 per 40ft container on 2 October. MSC announced Asia-North Europe rates of $3,150 per TEU and $4,500 per 40ft, effective 19 October. Analyst Linerlytica calls the Suez return the biggest threat to carriers' efforts to reverse the fall.
💼 Why it matters: Announced carrier increases are not the same as rates that stick. If you ship from Asia to Europe, use the current market index as a reference in your negotiations and do not accept a new surcharge simply because a carrier has announced it.
Asia-US and Asia-Europe container rates diverge to a record gap
5 October 2026 · The Loadstar
Consultancy Sea-Intelligence, using Drewry World Container Index data, reports that the spot rate gap between Asia-US and Asia-Europe routes is at a record. In the latest week, shipping from Asia to the US East Coast costs $7,026 per 40ft container more than to North Europe. The earlier record, in June 2021, was $3,179. The gap could last several months or close if rates simply fall. Sea-Intelligence argues that shippers need to change how they contract and manage freight price risk.
💼 Why it matters: The same container can cost thousands of dollars more or less depending on the destination region. Check whether your contracts are fixed or index-linked and which route you are exposed to.
German port strikes averted, but low Rhine still delays barge cargo
7 October 2026 · The Loadstar
The ver.di union and the ZDS employers' association reached a wage agreement for German port workers, so planned strikes at major ports were called off. The terms include a 3.4% wage rise backdated to 1 August. The union noted that employers still have to approve the result. Port yards remain busy: Kuehne + Nagel reports yard utilisation of about 90% in Bremerhaven and 80-85% in Hamburg. Low water on the Rhine still limits barge traffic to Rotterdam and Antwerp, with average barge waiting times of 36 hours in Antwerp and 56 hours in Rotterdam, according to Contargo.
💼 Why it matters: If you move containers into Germany, strike risk has fallen but inland delays have not. Ask your forwarder for the current barge and low-water surcharge and for a road or rail alternative.
Ship fuel prices are up about 75% since the Iran conflict began
7 October 2026 · Splash247
Singapore prices for very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) rose from $509 per tonne on 27 February to $886 per tonne in early October, an increase of 74%. High sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) rose from $432 to $764 per tonne. A 1,000-tonne VLSFO purchase now costs about $377,000 more than before the conflict, which began on 28 February 2026. Supply remains tight in several bunkering hubs.
💼 Why it matters: Fuel feeds directly into bunker surcharges. When a carrier raises a bunker adjustment, ask for the formula and the index used, and compare it with published fuel prices.
Few blanked sailings after Golden Week, but rates remain unclear
6 October 2026 · The Loadstar
Drewry's tracker lists 39 blanked (cancelled) sailings for weeks 41 to 45 (5 October to 8 November 2026) on the transpacific, transatlantic and Asia-Europe trades. That is about 5% of 710 scheduled voyages. Asia-North Europe blanking is at its lowest since the pandemic began. One forwarder expects increases of about $1,000 per 40ft in the second half of October, after reductions in the first half.
💼 Why it matters: Few cancellations mean carriers have spare capacity, which gives shippers more room to negotiate. Book early only if the price justifies it.

Airfreight rates edge up in September ahead of peak season
6 October 2026 · Air Cargo News
TAC Index data shows the average rate from Hong Kong to North America rose to $7.02 per kg in September from $6.98 in August, up 31% year on year. Hong Kong to Europe rose to $4.80 per kg from $4.58, up 8.8% year on year. The Baltic Air Freight Index rose 5% in the seven days to 5 October. Jet fuel was up more than 100% year on year. The article also cites a European Union charge of €3 per package on low-value shipments under €150 as pressure on Asia-to-Europe volumes.
💼 Why it matters: Rates are rising into the fourth-quarter peak. If you ship by air, confirm space and prices for November and December now, and ask which part of the price is fuel surcharge.
Indian exports to Russia stranded as Adani airports stop handling Russia cargo
7 October 2026 · The Loadstar
Eight Indian airports operated by the Adani Group, including Mumbai's two, have temporarily stopped handling Russia-related shipments, without an official explanation. About 150 tonnes of Indian exports to Russia, mainly pharmaceuticals, machinery and spare parts, have been stuck for a week. Industry observers link the stop to US sanctions on Russia, but this is not confirmed. Container carriers have also stopped taking bookings from India to the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk because of drone-attack risks.
💼 Why it matters: Sanctions exposure can stop cargo at the airport or port, even when your own goods are not sanctioned. If you ship to or through Russia-related destinations, check with every party in the chain before you ship.
AI and data centre growth keep driving global airfreight volumes
7 October 2026 · The Loadstar
Japan's airfreight exports are forecast to rise 11.9% in the fiscal year 2026, to 1.13 million tonnes, driven partly by semiconductor cargo tied to AI and data centre investment, according to the NX Logistics Research Institute. Data-centre-related airfreight worldwide is estimated at about 107,000 tonnes a month. China-to-US hi-tech shipments are down 9%, while volumes from other origins have risen strongly.
💼 Why it matters: High-value technology cargo is moving away from China-to-US routes towards other origins. This changes where air capacity is tight and where space is cheaper.

Poland's Baltic Hub expands rail capacity to 1.2 million TEU per year
6 October 2026 · RailFreight.com
The container terminal Baltic Hub, in Gdańsk, Poland, will raise annual rail handling capacity to 1.2 million TEU with two new electric rail-mounted gantry cranes. It handles nearly 800 trains a month. Total container capacity of the terminal rose to 4.5 million TEU per year after an expansion in late 2025.
💼 Why it matters: More rail capacity at a Baltic port gives importers and exporters in Central Europe another route option besides the North Sea ports.
Court allows higher cost limit for German rail infrastructure charges
6 October 2026 · RailFreight.com (partly paywalled)
A German court ruling on 1 October allowed the infrastructure manager DB InfraGO an upper cost limit of €8.2 billion for 2027. This means rail operators could pay higher track access charges than previously set. The article headline points to a further large increase in 2028. DB InfraGO says it will not use the full limit. The detail behind the percentages is behind a paywall, so no figures beyond these are reported here.
💼 Why it matters: Higher track access charges are usually passed on to customers. If you use rail freight through Germany, ask your operator how the 2027 charges will affect your prices.
ARS Altmann leases two Stadler Euro9000 locomotives for the Brenner corridor
5 October 2026 · Railway Gazette International
Automotive logistics company ARS Altmann has contracted the leasing company European Loc Pool for two Stadler Euro9000 electro-diesel locomotives. They will run international services on the Brenner corridor through Austria. The locomotives have type approval for all countries where the operator works, so trains do not need to change locomotives at borders.
💼 Why it matters: Fewer locomotive changes at borders reduce transit time and cost on cross-border rail services, which is relevant if you ship vehicles or parts by rail between Italy, Austria and Germany.
