The Global Trade Brief · 7 September 2026
Five minutes to understand what matters in global trade.
The Big Move
Global container fleet set to reach record 34m TEU
Why it matters: More vessel supply is entering service while limited recycling restrains capacity removal, widening the pool available to shippers.
- At the start of September, the fleet was only 8,000 TEU short of the milestone.
- September deliveries are scheduled at 46 ships totaling 286,000 TEU.
- Fleet capacity has grown 42% since early 2021, adding 10m TEU in five and a half years.
- August brought 20 deliveries with combined capacity of 153,000 TEU.
The Route
Rostock extends terminal for 680-metre freight trains
Why it matters: The completed extension gives the terminal scope to increase weekly departures, supporting the competitiveness of Rostock’s ferry and Ro-Ro traffic.
- An 80-metre extension was completed in July after 14 months of construction.
- Five tracks now hold trains under two gantry cranes, up from 600 metres previously.
- The terminal handles up to 44 freight trains a week.
- Rostock Port owns the terminal and Rostock Trimodal operates it.
The Number

about €350m
Why it matters: Spanish pork suppliers face reduced export revenue as disease-related market effects hit overseas sales.
- ANICE’s estimate covers exports to Japan and Mexico.
- The assessment covers the first half of 2026.
The Risk
FeSMC UGT calls conditional Guadalajara strike for 21 September
Why it matters: More than 45,000 workers could join the action, exposing logistics operations across the province to disruption if no agreement is reached.
- Sector agreement negotiations began nine months ago.
- Annual working time is 1,800 hours, which the union wants reduced.
- Some companies have more than 50% of workers on agency contracts, according to Ávila.
What to Watch
- Chile and India seek to conclude CEPA talks before year-end.
- France’s implementation of escalating penalties for ultra-fast-fashion platforms.
